Tourism and Culture
Adorable, interesting, sociable, bursting with energy and natural – that is Lingen, the largest city in the Emsland. Lingen is embedded in the wonderful river landscape of the River Ems, surrounded by extended forest lands and uncountable fields and meadows – vacation begins directly in Lingen, at your door step. The possibilities to organize your vacation and leisure time in close touch with nature are almost unlimited.
There are 220 kilometers of signposted bike paths leading through trans-regional and local routes in the middle of the lively cultural landscape of the Emsland. The idyllic surroundings offer hikers, Nordic walkers, riders and canoeists unique natural experiences. Music, theater, painting and fine arts: There is hardly any other city of the size of Lingen that has such a comprehensive cultural offer as here. The local cultural life is just full of life. The "Theater an the Wilhelmshöhe" is a classic auditorium with 750 seats. Operas, dramas, musicals, concerts and light comedies are brought to stage. There is approximately a total audience of 55.000 per season, with over 2.500 season tickets per year. Young people can get a taste of the theatre too at particularly low prices with the special Youth Season Ticket.
The theatre in the Lingener "Professorenhaus" seats up to 140 visitors and presents cabaret and children´s theatre productions such as the annual “Kiki und Pupps” children’s theatre series. This historic building accommodates the entertaining and exciting “Haus der Sinne” (House of the Senses) over two floors which guests of every age can visit for free during opening hours.
The Professorenhaus is also home to the "Theaterpädagogische Zentrum der Emsländischen Landschaft" (Emsland Drama Education Center), the largest further training institution of its kind in Germany. Lingen is also the birthplace of a key global event: the World Festival of Children’s Theatre, which travels round the world but returns to Lingen every four years. The festival offers the unique possibility to get to know different cultures of the world in a natural way. The population of Lingen always cordially welcomes the multicultural little ambassadors in guest families and enjoys getting enthused by the refreshing frankness and happiness of the children.
Chamber music, cabaret and ecclesiastical music are staged for audiences up to 400 in the former church building known as the “Kulturforum St. Michael“. The Emslandhallen – the venue for rock, pop, “Schlager” (German popular music) and folk music, which also serves as a metting place and trade fair exhibition hall – accommodates up to 8.000 people.
Fine art is strongly represented in Lingen with the 'Kunsthalle' (Art Gallery) and 'Kunstschule' (School of Arts). Both of them are managed by the 'Kunstverein' (Art Society). With regular exhibitions by contemporary artists from home and abroad in the Art Gallery the art scenery really has its finger on the pulse. The “Kunstschule” (Art School) inspires young and old alike to individual artistic expressions, as does the Musikschule (School of Music), the students of which make a name for themselves every year with impressive successes in regional and national competitions.
Regional art, culture and history are documented and showcased by a range of institutions. The Emslandmuseum regularly presents much-noticed topic-exhibitions, and the "Lern- und Gedenkort Jüdische Schule" (Jewish School Learning and Memorial Centre) runs a permanent exhibition on the fate of Jewish families in Lingen. The 'Kivelinge' also characterize, besides the cultural life, the urban image of Lingen. Every three years 'Pfingsten' (Whitsunday) is totally influenced by one particular historical event dating back to the Middle Ages. It was 600 years ago, when the bachelor sons of the bourgeoisie courageously defended Lingen. As a result they were awarded a “Historical Spectaculum“. Today this festival is a present of the 'Kivelinge' to the citizens of the City and many guests from the surrounding areas.
